Get your Manhasset or Port Washington Home Ready for Winter

Good Morning!

The calendar says October and it is time to schedule activities to get your home ready for winter! Every Fall, I receive calls from first-time homeowners who closed in the summer asking, “Winter is coming, what should we be doing to our new house?”

There are certain tasks every homeowner should do to protect their Manhasset or Port Washington home before the ground freezes and the weather turns cold. Here are 6 activities I recommend my new homeowners put on their MUST DO list:

1. OUTDOOR FAUCETS – take off the hose, put it away and make sure you find the turn off valve and close the outdoor faucets. This will allow you to avoid a burst pipe.

2. LAWN IRRIGATION – Call your sprinkler/lawn irrigation company and schedule an appointment to have your lines blown out – again to avoid a rupture in your system.

3. CLEAN THE GUTTERS – I reccomend you do this 2 times in the Fall – the early Fall and the late Fall. Debris in your gutters can freeze and water can back up under your roof line and into your home. Call a professional roofer or gutter cleaning company to do this job, it can be dangerous to use ladders and climb on roofs.

4. CHECK THE ROOF – If you have a slate Roof, call your roofer and have him inspect the roof and replace any loose or missing slates. If you have a composite roof, have the roofer check the integrity of the roof for leaks.

5. SERVICE THE FURNACE – Have your service contractor come in and clean and service the furnace and replace the filter(Hot Air Systems). Annual maintenance keeps your equipment running effeciently and frequent filter changing improves the air quality in your home. Ask your service contractor how frequently to change the filters to keep your system running its best.

That’s a quick short list of Winter must-do’s.  I hope it helps you prepare for the coming Winter
